Top 5 reasons to join QUT UNSA!

As O-Week for Semester 1 gets under way, we are gearing up for a big year of engaging and fun events for all our members. To all the fresh faces who have joined us, or if you're still on the fence about becoming a member, here's 5 Top Reasons why you should sign up today!

1. Meeting new people

Whether you are a first year or a fourth-year student, there is always time to meet new people at uni. Joining QUTUNSA is an excellent opportunity to meet other students with similar interests, and makes for an easy way to expand your network while having fun. QUTUNSA holds some tremendous social events such as the International Relations ball, Trivia night, Bowling night, and end of semester parties! (Especially if you are an outbound student not from Brisbane, this is a great way to make new friends from other faculties and universities!)

2. Professional networking

Getting a head start in developing professional connections is something QUTUNSA can help you achieve! Our annual Global Pathways Networking Night gives members the opportunity to network with industry experts across politics, law, business, diplomacy and academia, many with experience in the global workforce and even working for the UN. This is a night you would not want to miss out on. The QUT UNSA 2019 Global Pathways Networking Night is currently slated for March 2019, so keep an eye out for when tickets go on sale as they always tickets sell out fast!

3. Gaining new skills

Model United Nations (MUNs) are simulations of a UN committee, and prove an excellent opportunity to expand your skill set and build your confidence as an advocate and public speaker. As a nation’s delegate, students research complex international issues and negotiate with other delegates to reach resolutions on international policy, all whilst navigating geopolitical tensions and alliances, and the limits of strict Rules of Procedure. Our own Marketing & Publications officer Samara Wendt blogged about her experience as a first-timer at the annual SydMUN2018 conference in Sydney. QUTUNSA often funds members to attend these interstate MUNs, while the shorter mini-MUNs we host ourselves on campus provide the perfect opportunity for beginners to get a feel for this dynamic and engaging activity.

QUTUNSA’s annual International Criminal Court Mooting Competition in conjunction with the QUT Law Society is an excellent opportunity for law students and international criminal law enthusiasts to develop their mooting skills. Our 2018 ICC Moot final was adjudicated by an esteemed panel including former High Court Justice Ian Callinan and former Queensland Supreme Court Justice Margaret McMurdo.

4. Getting involved

When I first stepped onto campus, orientation week was on and I was still overwhelmed with starting uni. I chose not to get involved in any extracurricular activities. I still regret that decision till this day. Getting involved in extracurricular activities is an excellent way to settle into first year better. Through joining clubs at Uni, I’ve personally met a lot of awesome people who helped me adjust to Uni a lot better than my first semester. My advice as a third year is to give it a go!

5. Having a good time!

At UNSA we know how to have a good time. After all the MUNs and professional networking nights comes our flagship annual event of the year, the International Relations ball (IR ball). The IR ball is definitely a night to remember. Prepare your finest suits or dresses because this is a night to dress up fancy and have a superb time with friends without worrying about any Uni assignments deadlines! PS: Last year there was free Halloumi fries and Espresso Martinis!
